Hong Kong’s court convicts pro-democracy figure Jimmy Lai with 8 other activists

Hong Kong’s court has convicted the pro-democracy media figure Jimmy Lai over 2019 peaceful protests; as well as “Hong Kong’s father of democracy” Martin Lee and 7 other prominent activists. Among them were veteran pro-democracy figures and former lawmakers.

Furthermore, the court charged them for organizing and taking part in an unauthorized protest on August 18th, 2019 in Victoria park. The decision comes just days after Chinese lawmakers approved a sweeping plan that effectively ends open elections in Hong Kong.
This act furthers efforts to stifle the freedom of the press; as revealed by Hong Kong’s place in the 2020 Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Freedom Index; which has fallen to the 80th place.
