We congratulate the Burmese journalist Swe Win for being named a recipient of the 2021 Shorenstein Journalism Award; and for recognition by the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC). In fact, Swe Win is scheduled to receive the award in the fall quarter of 2021.
Presented annually by APARC, the Shorenstein award is conferred upon a journalist who has contributed significantly to a greater understanding of Asia through outstanding reporting on critical issues affecting the region.
In addition to that, Gi-Wook Shon, the Shorenstein APARC Director, highlighted Swe Win’s contributions in his comments; “His (Swe Win) work demonstrates the moral force of independent, investigative journalism to speak truth to power; and he now leads a courageous, resilient fight for press freedom in the face of brutal attacks on democracy and liberty. It is our honor to recognize him with the Shorenstein Journalism Award.”
At ADALA we support and enable efforts by local journalists working in oppressive environments; undertakings like those spearheaded by Swe Win in Burma.
