In spite of Tatmadaw’s increased steps to persecute, intimidate, and harass journalists in Myanmar which constitutes clear attempts to suppress freedom of expression and information, peaceful dissent while obscuring violations they’ve committed since February 1st coup-d’état. Burmese Journalists (Myanmar) high-quality images and video for reports founded in on-the-ground truth. These digital Burmese journalists are from Yangon, Karin, and Kachin state enabled and empowered by ADALA’s capacity-building programs. They are amongst those on the ground facing mounting pressure; and this all comes from areas where suppression of digital connections has made it increasingly difficult to pass information to global outlets.
In addition to that, another unfortunate case of how the media in Myanmar has been besieged for trying to uncover the human rights violations committed by the military; in this ruthless suppression is Danny Fenster’s. Managing editor of news site Frontier Myanmar he became the third foreign journalist arrested and detained by authorities; this time at Yangon’s Mingalardon Airport while waiting to board a flight to Malaysia; however up until this very day, no charges have been made against him.
With the increased measures taken by authoritarian regimes to subjugate the press and infringe on journalists’ human rights and open society; such as what we’ve witnessed on May 23rd where Belarussian dictator Alexander Lukashenko has taken state-sponsored terrorism to new heights; and ordered to force down a Ryanair plane endangering the lives of the passengers and crew to arrest Roman Protasevich; an opposition journalist and founder of the NEXTA TV a prominent Telegram channel.
We at ADALA are committed to ensuring that the rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom; are respected, protected, promoted, and fulfilled.
