A Myanmar military court sentenced 2 journalists to 2 years in prison; for carrying out their professional duties and covering events. The journalists are Aung Kyaw, correspondent of the “Democratic Voice of Burma”; and Zaw Zaw, correspondent of the “Mizzima News Agency”.
The court charged them with spreading false information that would incite disorder.
Furthermore, the “Democratic Voice of Burma” Foundation said in a statement: “Aung Kyaw was arrested on March 1st for publishing reports of anti-military demonstrations in Meek”. And they emphasized that he defended himself in court after his lawyers received threats from the authorities.
On the other hand, Mizzima Agency said in a statement; “Zaw Zaw was detained about 2 months ago at his home while covering events for the agency in Meek and Dawei, also in southern Myanmar”.
